Every year, billions of birds migrate at night and navigate by the night sky, but bright city lights and sky-glow can disorient them — leading to energy depletion, collisions with buildings and windows, and vulnerability to other urban hazards.
Audubon
By participating in the Lights Out Program, Doylestown Township is committed to taking practical steps to reduce light pollution during critical migration periods. Some of the actions the Township and local building owners will adopt include:
- Turning off or dimming decorative exterior lighting at night.
- Eliminating unnecessary flood-lights or pot-lights aimed upward or horizontally.
- Using motion sensors and controls so lighting is used only when necessary.
- Ensuring any new lighting installations are down-shielded and properly directed, avoiding over-lighting.
Audubon
We believe this initiative aligns strongly with our community’s environmental stewardship goals, supports wildlife conservation, and contributes to energy savings. We encourage residents, businesses and building managers in the Township to join us in this effort by evaluating their own nighttime lighting practices.
