Drug Awareness, Prevention and Education

According to the Center for Disease Control, “Deaths from drug overdose have been rising steadily over the past two decades and have become the leading cause of injury death in the United States. Every day in the United States, 114 people die as a result of drug overdose, and another 6,748 are treated in emergency departments (ED) for the misuse or abuse of drugs. Nearly 9 out of 10 poisoning deaths are caused by drugs.”

Pennsylvania is not immune this problem. In fact, according to the Trust for America’s Health, Pennsylvania had the 14th highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States in 2013. The number of drug overdose deaths – a majority of which are from prescription drugs – in Pennsylvania increased by 89 percent since 1999.

Drug Drop Off Box

Doylestown Township has a permanent MedReturn Drug Collection Unit.

Citizens looking to dispose of excess and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications can now visit the safe and secure permanent drop off location at the Doylestown Township Police Department located at 425 Wells Road, Doylestown PA, 18901.

The Council of Southeast PA, Inc., has partnered with the Doylestown Township Police and the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office to establish a permanent MedReturn drug collection program in order to reduce the supply of drugs that can potentially harm teens and adults.

According to the 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), more than six million Americans abuse prescription drugs. Among youth who are 12 to 17 years old, 7.4 percent report past year non-medical use of prescription drugs.

Properly disposing of excess drugs is everyone’s responsibility as a matter of public safety. More than 70 percent of young people abusing prescription pain relievers get them through friends or family, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet. Now Doylestown Township citizens won’t have to wait for a specific take-back day to clean out their medicine cabinets.

The collection site is open during normal business hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Following the death of Anna Straw from a heroin overdose in November 2014, the Straw family is allowing The Presbyterian Church of Deep Run to use her name for a free community education program. How to Save a Life Foundation

Located in Warminster, PA, Marti Hottenstein created the How to Save a Life Foundation after her son, Karl, died of a drug overdose in October 2006. after being refused treatment at an in-patient facility. The Foundation provides resources and services for those looking to get help for drug addiction.
