Recycling

Doylestown recycles, and recycling works. Recycling reduces waste that goes into our landfills, decreases litter, and saves lots of the energy needed for manufacturing of these items in the first place. But we all need to do what we can as individuals to make recycling as effective as it can be.

Recycling aluminum, steel, glass, and paper/cardboard are very effective. For example, recycled aluminum uses only 5% of the energy needed to make new aluminum from ore, and aluminum is infinitely recyclable. Aluminum is surely our most sustainable packaging material. Steel, paper, and glass are also readily recycled, so these are good consumer choices, and we should recycle as much of these materials as possible.

The recycling of plastic is less successful because the recycled plastic product has less value. Less than 10% of plastic containers are ever recycled (as compared with 50% of aluminum cans) and new plastic drink bottles contain only about 6% recycled material (as compared to 73% recycled material in aluminum cans). Plastic waste is a very big problem in our global environment, and we will never recycle our way out of the plastic pollution problem. We should reduce our use of ‘single-use plastic’ (such as drink bottles, plastic bags and utensils and Styrofoam cups) as much as possible. Aluminum, steel and glass are better choices.

Here are some things to consider when recycling.

  • All recycling materials should be clean, without food residue. Spoiled food waste smells terrible and contaminates the recycled product. Rinse used food containers. Dirty or greasy pizza boxes should go in the trash. Your recycling pail should never smell like garbage!
  • No plastic bags, ever! Do not bag your recycling materials. Plastic bags cannot be processed by most recycling centers, and they badly gum up the works. If you want to recycle plastic bags or plastic film, it needs to be taken a plastic bag collection point; most supermarkets will collect plastic bags. Reusable shopping bags are the best choice.
  • Similarly, no hoses, electric cords, or rope, please.
  • Do recycle aluminum and steel cans, paper and cardboard, and glass bottles and containers.
  • Plastic #1, #2 and #5 are generally recyclable. Others are not. Plastic food containers should be rinsed.
  • Do not recycle trash! Plastic children’s’ toys, broken Corning ware or China, odd bits of metal are not recyclable. Styrofoam is not recyclable. Plastic coated milk cartons and juice boxes are not recyclable. When in doubt, just throw it out!
