Septic, Sewer & Water

Over half of Doylestown Township’s 6,000 households rely on private wells for their water, while others receive public water service through the Doylestown Township Municipal Authority (DTMA) or the Bucks County Water & Sewer Authority (BCWSA). Similarly, residents are either connected to public sewer service provided by BCWSA or use on-lot septic systems. Because much of the community depends on groundwater, Doylestown Township is committed to protecting this vital resource through responsible wastewater management and proper septic system maintenance.

On-Lot Septic Systems & the Septage Management Program (SMP)

Doylestown Township adopted Ordinance No. 299 in 2001 to protect groundwater quality and public health. This ordinance established the Septage Management Program (SMP), which requires:

  • All properties with on-lot septic systems to be pumped and inspected every three years by a Township-approved pumper/hauler
  • Water testing for coliform bacteria (E. coli) every three years if you also have a private well

For details on the program and to see the license haulers and water testing facilities, visit our Septic Management Program page.

Homes in Doylestown Township are either connected to public sewer or use on-lot septic systems. The public sewer system is owned and operated by the Bucks County Water & Sewer Authority (BCWSA):
