Community Service and Veteran's Memorial |
| |
As you may
have already heard, Doylestown Township is in the process of planning
a "Community Service and Veteran's Memorial." We are very excited about the
township's plans to create a permanent memorial as a tribute to
ordinary citizens who have contributed in an extraordinary way to the
community and their county.
This generic symbol, which grew from a simple request to erect a
monument to a decorated war hero, will recognize
those people who have fought in war to protect our freedoms as
well as those who have helped make their community a better place to
live, and will be a perpetual, enduring monument.
|
The centerpiece of the memorial is a three-sided,
8-foot-high sculpture with dozens of faces depicting unnamed soldiers,
police officers, firefighters, nurses, doctors, teachers, public
officials, volunteers and others. The sculpture has been designed by
Ashby Saunders, who also created the "Sack Race" sculpture that stands
in Central Park.

The planning, design, construction, and
fundraising for this unique "Community Service Memorial" is being
undertaken by a citizens committee. No township tax dollars will be
used to fund the monument. A volunteer committee is seeking to raise
$150,000 to create and maintain the memorial, and has kicked off a
fundraising campaign that will include the sale of bricks and granite
pavers that will surround the memorial. The money raised will pay for
the bronze monolithic sculpture and a landscaped setting for the
monument, which will include a granite walkway, granite benches,
flower beds, lights, and a flagpole that will be illuminated 24 hours
a day. The funds will also support permanent maintenance and upkeep of
the memorial.
We need your help! We are asking for your support in this project to
honor all citizens who served and helped build our community. This can
be a way of paying lasting homage to a family member, friend or
neighbor who served our community in any capacity. Contributions are
welcome at all levels and are tax deductible. Please help us build
this permanent monument to honor those often forgotten heroes.
Honor that special volunteer or community member in
your life with a gift that will last forever ~ an inscription on a brick
or granite paver that will surround the monument.
